Major in Mathematics

a major in mathematics must meet the following requirements. All

• All majors must take:
  • MTH 141 Calculus I
  • MTH 142 Calculus II
  • MTH 243 Calculus III
  • MTH 161 Discrete Mathematics or MTH 206 Mathematical Logic and Proof Methods
  • MTH 211 Linear Algebra
  • CSC 210 Computer Science I
• The remaining 20 credits must come from courses numbered above 199 and must include:
  • One of the following course pairings:
    • MTH 311 Advanced Calculus and MTH 313 Applied Analysis
    • MTH 302 Number theory and MTH 411 Abstract Algebra
    • MTH 405 Theory of Probability and MTH 406 Mathematical Statistics
  • One of
    • MTH 311 Advanced Calculus
    • MTH 411 Abstract Algebra
  • Two courses is applied mathematics chosen from
    • MTH 212 Differential Equations
    • MTH 262 Discrete Mathematics II
    • MTH 307 Operations Research
    • MTH 313 Applied Analysis
    • MTH 406 Mathematical Statistics

The above requirements are considered minimal. Students are encouraged to consult with an advisor from the Mathematics faculty early in their undergraduate career to ensure completion of a program which is appropriate for the individual student.

Computer applications are emphasized in many of the courses in mathematics. Therefore, students planning to major in mathematics are urged to take CSC 210 (Programs & Applications) early in their academic program.

Requirements for students seeking secondary school certification (AYA) in mathematics differ somewhat from those above.
